This course is designed to prepare entry-level phlebotomists or others interested in the medical field, following The Department of Health Services guidelines. In this course, the student will learn the skills and attitudes necessary to perform venipuncture blood collection. The student will gain confidence and professionalism in the collection of specimens for laboratory analysis, through repeated hands-on practice and instructor feedback followed by a clinical internship. Students are provided instruction in communication, medical terminology, basic anatomy, venipuncture specimen collection, as well as complications and variables surrounding venipuncture. Study objectives are provided to enable students to pass the National Phlebotomy Certification Examination, given at the end of the 4-week course. This course will provide clinical experience for each student, so they have the opportunity for hands-on experience. The course consists of 4 weeks of classroom education All hours will be logged and require an instructor sign-off before completion of the course. The course will focus on the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system, blood specimen processing, levels of organization, and healing and disease mechanisms. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training will be included in the course. At the end of the phlebotomy course, students will take an exam to obtain their Phlebotomy Certification. In addition, an externship will be available for each student to participate and engage in different experiences in drawing blood.
